Day Care Code Changes and Enforcement

In 2016, Arkansas adopted a code that stated day cares and child care facilities shall be equipped with a voice evacuation system (International Building Code (IBC for short): 907.2.3).  Since then, Arkansas officials have given such locations time to adopt this code and have a voice evacuation system installed to fulfill said code.  Not only have they adopted voice evacuation into their codes for Day Care facilities, they have adopted the necessity for Carbon Monoxide detectors in facilities containing any gas burning appliance or attached garage(IBC: 915.1.1).

Both Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Voice Evacuation can be integrated into an existing fire alarm panel, equipment permitting.

Arkansas defines a “Day Care” facility as a location with less than 100 but more than 5 children under the age of 2 1/2 years oldIt is important to note that if your facility only hosts children during Religious Worship, you are not considered a day care, as Arkansas officials consider you to be a part of the primary function of the building rather than a day care facility (IBC: 305.2, 308.6).

For more information, please refer to the linked code manuals below.

Starting January 1, 2018, Arkansas Fire Marshals will start actively enforcing the listed code requirements during their annual fire inspections.  Failure to do so can result in your doors being locked and/or the State of Arkansas removing your license to operate.  It is imperative that you resolve these issues immediately - wether through us, or another company - to ensure that your business remains open and functioning for years to come.
