NFPA 10 requires annual inspection of fire extinguishers

Monthly Inspections: An authorized person may visually check for any outside damage as well as making sure the gauge is always reading in the green. This record is kept on the back of the tag by dating and initialing

6 year maintenance: Performed six years after extinguisher’s manufactured date. O-rings, valve stems, visual inspection, recharged, collared & stickered. (limited to stored pressure dry-chemical types only)

12 year maintenance: Performed twelve years after extinguisher’s manufactured date. O-rings, valve stems, visual inspection, washed out, hydrostatic pressure tested for any leaks etc, recharged, collared & stickered.

There are five types of fire extinguishers (A B C D and K)

Most common are the ABC class fire extinguisher and the class K fire extinguisher. An ABC fire extinguisher is used for most combustibles. A class D fire extinguisher is used for flammable metals while the class K fire extinguisher is used for cooking oils.
